Love In Second Sight-- A Testimony from Monica Jiang
Written by Monica Jiang Translated by Naomi
When I first came to Canada, I had a homestay.I joined the homestay family because I wanted to live with Canadians. I also wanted to improve my language skill.Later, I discovered that I was staying with a groups of Christian. They prayed to God before every dinner. They prayed for me. They invited me to go church with you on Sunday mornings. I didn't enjoyed my early church experiences. However, I noticed how important for them to go church. Therefore, I went to church with them in order to respect their religion. I didn't understand Pastor's preaching. I felt really sleepy in church. As a result, I stopped attending church once I moved to my dormitory. I enjoyed my freedom.
In my school, there was a special corner. I didn't pay much attention to it at first. Later, I discovered that a Canadian couple was there every Friday. They had a booth there for delivering Bible and evangelical booklets. These books were prepared for international students like me. They invited me to join their Sunday school. That was the first time for me to know about Sunday school. I thought Sunday school was a group of international students gathering together for food and social activities. I was not that interested in studying Bible. I often skipped the studies. This couple was very special for me. During holidays, they would invite us to their home. They cooked for us. During Christmas season, they prepared gifts for each of us. Whoever went to their place received a gift. They cared about all of us. They paid close attention to every single individual. No matter what troubles we had, they took initiative to help us. They didn't expect us to give anything for return. They were like our families.
In 2007, I moved from Kamloops to Toronto. There were free English lessons provided by one of the local churches. My Mum went to the church for free lessons. She then started to attend church on Sundays. I joined her in the end. This was the second period for me to know about Christian life. Compared to my previous experiences, I felt much mre comfortable. I was very curious about church. What was so wonderful about a church? Why a church could attract so many people? Why people from different ethnic background all went to church? Why my Mum also went there?
Later, my Mum had a body check. Her doctor discovered that she had cancer. The doctor suggested her to have operation immediately. I was very afraid at the moment. I felt awful. The operation was scheduled in the morning. On the morning,Pastor Luo took us to the hospital. Pastor and aunties from church held my hands when Mum went to operation room. They prayed for my Mum. Thanks The Lord. The operation was successful. After the operation, Pastor and aunties came to my home to visit my Mum.This reminded me the couple in Kamloops.I didn't know them much, but they took such a good care of me. I was very surprised. I was deeply touched. Among all of them, auntie Wang helped us most. She was old enough to be my grandmother. However, she walked to my home every day without complaining. In order to help my Mum recover better, she cooked good food for my Mum. I didn't believe in The Lord at the moment, but I was moved by their actions. They were such a group of great people. I expressed my appreciation towards them. Auntie Wang told me, "Please don't give thanks to me. Give thanks to The Lord."
This showed me what love is. The true love was very impressive because those loving people had done what I couldn't achieve by myself. I have experienced the love from Christ through the caring actions of Christian couples, Pastor, and sisters in church. Thanks The Lord for loving an unlovable person like me. I want to believe in him. I want to take his love to more people who are in need.
